The BS of PR

Monday, January 14th, 2008

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Ok, so the other day some guy emailed me to swap links with one of my niche sites. I sent him back an email stating he could submit the link on our eSyndicate link directory for that site. He then emailed me back - the site didn’t have a high enough PR. What gives? He contacted me first!

If you have been living under a rock, you may not have heard about Google’s toolbar with the PR feature. PR, according to Google stands for Page Rank. In reality, it stands for Public Relations - public relations for Google. This webmaster worried about the PR of the site according to Google, never mind he had found the site because it was listed in both the top two rankings in its category!

Don’t worry about the PR of a site (unless, maybe, it has a PR of 0) - worry more about whether the site’s theme fits in with your site’s theme, whether the site has good content, and whether the site can send you real visitors.

Google Destroys the Internet

Is it me, or does it seem that Google is destroying the internet?

Whenever I see Adsense ads on a web page I want to bang my head, especially when it’s on the home page.  I mean, why would anyone with a serious business put adsense on their home pages?  Do you see Adsense on IBM’s home page (or anywhere on their site for that matter), or Dell, or any company that comes to your mind.  Of course they don’t and it’s not just because it would tarnish their image.  What would happen if IBM showed adsense on its site?  Dell would buy ads there and it would be an embarrasement to IBM.

Adsense seems to have promoted a proliferation of bad websites.  Websites with no original content.  Websites with articles copied from other websites.  Ugly websites.

If you want to monetize your traffic, drop the adsense and pick up affiliate links which blend in with the content of your site.
